A Comment on Huffington Post Article on American Diggers

American Diggers. This show does nothing to add to our cultural understanding of our heritage. It promotes the destruction and monetization of objects that for many of us, represent a shared history that is owned by the many, not just a few.
Many professional archaeologists, including myself, have spoken out against this blatant portrayal of looting and the selling off of our history. Many professional organizations such as the Society for American Archaeology and the American Anthropological Association have called upon Spike TV to remove this show.
If our heritage is for sale, then it only goes to prove to the rest of the world, that America, at its foundation, is for sale to the highest bidder. We have lost our collective conscious and our national identity to those who pay the highest, or provide the quickest return. I do not care if the show is fake, what I do care about is the lesson it teaches to everyone, that it is the object and its worth are more valued than the knowledge and cultural capital for us all.

I'm still trying to figure out if the Huffington Post believes this nonsense or not. Why give these people face time or promotional time? I think they should rot in jail, after all, they are stealing from you and me...our cultural history is not for f**king sale!

  1. You are right on about this. I can remember watching the face of an Egyptian tour guide tell our group about the things that used to be in certain tombs and temples but are now scattered in museums throughout the world--having been claimed by Carter and others who came to Egypt during the "golden age" of tomb robbing and just took the heritage of that country away. All in the name of archaeology. Do we want that to happen here? I think not. As for Savage and Company---they are a bunch of thieves and should be prosecuted. I love the way they get the "owners" to agree to let them dig. That is mental abuse and thievery, as well. Harrumph!!
